How Honest Are You with All People – Personality Traits of a Millionaire
Trent over at The Simple Dollar is discussing the The Millionaire Mind by Thomas Stanley. He has also reviewed the popular finance book The Millionaire Next Door
which I just absolutely have to pick up only I need to add one more to the set – Millionaire Women Next Door: The Many Journeys of Successful American Businesswomen
In the meantime, something in his post caught my attention…
He was talking about the top ten traits the millionaires considered to be most influential in their path to financial success.
Being honest with all people
Being well-disciplined
Getting along with people
Having a supportive spouse
Working harder than most people
Loving my career/business
Having strong leadership qualities
Having a very competitive spirit/personality
Being very well organized
Having an ability to sell my ideas/products
The number one most important trait identified as key to success – from The Millionaire Mind
Being honest with all people.
It’s that simple… or maybe it’s that complicated. Before we can be honest with others, we need to be honest with ourselves. To be straight forward and honest in our dealings with others takes character.
Of course, there will be those that make tons of money without making it a point of being honest with people. I believe that living an honest life increases the odds in your favor. People will be drawn to your honest walk in business, with your family and simply within yourself.
I know for myself that as I hit my forties, I simply wanted to be more honest with myself and others because it was a waste of time and energy to live a life of “pretending” even in the simple things. It is a sign of coming into yourself – being honest with others.
As for the character development of the successful entrepreneur – these traits really can be found in today’s business owners and millionaires. Last weekend, I watched a television show about Rachel Ray’s business career. She was quick to say that her parents insisted that she be honest, hard working, dedicated, kind (never insult people) and be upfront in her dealings with others. These traits have served her well, over and over in the business world as well as her personal relationships – according to the biography.
Actually, when I went back and looked over the list again of the top 10 traits – I saw that Rachel Ray’s background showed her having 9 out of 10 of these traits as she was working her way toward being a succesful entrepreneur (she wasn’t married at the time so no supportive spouse).
I had already spent this last week mulling over these characteristics of a successful business owner that shone through on this quickie profile of how she went from working in a gourmet deli to publishing cookbooks and hosting television shows. Whether you enjoy watching Rachel Ray isn’t what is important – it is taking away something valuable about our own dreams of success and financial goals.
Each of us has our own dreams and goals – we also hold the key to getting what we want out of life. It’s really a matter of how we go about it and our level of focus and commitment to making things HAPPEN.
As Trent contends and I agree – the millionaire mindset at it’s core is based on personal development and productivity.
Becoming debt free means having focused intensity toward our money goals. Look again at the top 10 traits – there is a personality underlying these traits but there is also a lot of ACTION. Doing, Being – a person that makes things happen.
